Area of Study
An Area of Study is “about the concept - that is, the idea and how it circulates in society on the topic,” NOT a “topic or theme.” (Dixon & Simpson, 2014, p. 29) An Area of Study looks at ranges of meaning being represented in a text, as shaped by a range of contextual factors, whereas a topic or theme will only focus on the idea itself (Dixon & Simpson, 2014, p. 20).
In this Area of Study, students are to explore the ways in which the concept of discovery is represented in and through a wide range of texts. The Prescriptions Rubric (BOSTES, 2014) for Standard and Advanced English provides an initial framework for the study of discovery.

"In their responses and compositions, students examine, question, and reflect and speculate on:
Ensure students know that:
- their own experiences of discovery
- engagements with texts
- assumptions underlying various representations
- representations of people, relationships, societies, places, events and ideas
- composer's choice of language modes, forms, features and structure
- deepen their understanding of themselves."
Ensure students know that:
- "A concept is an idea, belief or assumption".
- "Form refers to a novel, film, poetry, drama, etc.".
- "Language features refers to words, phrases and techniques, including visual language of film and other visual forms".
